What’s the Point of Networking?
January 6th, 2010 Posted in Blog, NetworkingIf you were to go to a networking event and ask everyone the same question, “Why are you here?” most likely the most common response would be “I’m here to grow my business.” What we have to remember is that the people we meet at these networking events may not be our next clients, but they may refer us to someone who will be. I have to remind myself of this on a regular basis.
Majority of the time a referral is not made that day or even in the next week or month. However, if your attendance at the networking event is consistent and you keep showing up someone is bound to remember what you do and refer someone to you.
It takes commitment and consistency to build your network, but over time it will pay off!

Will, I agree with your point about the power of referrals with networking. The challenge for me is staying on someone’s mind. How do you help someone remember what you do if you are not that helpful to them at the time due to a lack of experience?

Stay top of mind by sending e-intros. If you’re out networking, your bound to run into someone that your other contact is looking for. If I tell you I am looking for IT Professionals, and you run into one, make the introduction via e-mail. That way you stay top of mind with me.
